Chios Mastic

Chios Mastiha is the natural resin that comes out of the trunk and branches of schinos tree. It is unique in the world, since mastic trees only grow in a specific area of the island of Chios, called mastichochoria (Mastic villages). The bark of the tree is engraved using a sharp tool and as a result mastic is secreted, much like a tear flowing towards the ground. This secretion has a sticky and clear consistency, while 15 days later, it forms an irregularly shaped crystal. It's officially a PDO product (Protected Designation of Origin), which ensures its unique origin. It is used in cooking, baking, in beverages, in pharmaceuticals and in cosmetics. The multitude of its beneficial properties for the human body makes it invaluable.
