Zakynthos ( Zante)

The island of Zakynthos, which was also referred to as "Fior di Levante” (in English: “Eastern flower”) by the Venetians, is famous for its unique, natural beauty. The dense forests of Zakynthos and stunning beaches with turquoise waters, its rich fauna and flora, the magnificent National Marine Park, which hosts the rare Caretta-Caretta sea turtles, the Mediterranean seal species Monachus-Monachus, Posidonian fields hidden under the water and beautiful sand dunes, are a pole of attraction for every traveller. The monuments and architecture −the ruins of the Venetian fortress, the gates bearing old coats of arms, the arched arcades on the streets of the city, the exquisite decorations on the balconies– all make up an atmosphere that takes you back to times gone by. The musical and cultural tradition of Zakynthos is also worth mentioning. The Greek National poet, Dionysius Solomos, was inspired by Zakynthos when he composed the Greek National Anthem. Zakynthos is also home to other major Greek authors and poets, such as Andreas Kalvos. Historical references of the island date back from mythology up to this day. During its rich history, Zakynthos was conquered by the Romans, the Byzantines, the Venetians, under whose lengthy occupation its culture prospered, and subsequently by the French and the British, until it was finally united with Greece in 1864.
