Product Description

Carefully preserved, patiently waiting in casks, fine spirits around the world age and evolve, while interacting with the environment around them. Through evaporation, the water and alcohol they contain slip through the pores of the casks. In humid conditions, evaporation naturally acts more on alcohol than on water, leaving the aged spirit with a reduced alcoholic strength. What flees the cask is the share of the spirit destined to be enjoyed by the Angels, known as Angels’ Share.

This is not quite what happens in the cellars of the House of Metaxa, in Attica.

Ours is a unique, almost magical story. In Attica the humidity is low, temperatures are moderate and stable throughout the year. As a result the Angels treat our blends in a very different, unexpected way.

Sneaking off a bigger portion of water, the Angels leave behind a more concentrated and intensely aromatic blend. The spirit they have left behind has a significantly higher alcoholic content than when initially placed inside the cask. This blend of aged Muscat wines and exquisite distillates, meticulously selected and left to mature for decades, is a one of a kind, aged spirit, different from any other. The amber liquid is graced with a deep perfume of bitter orange peel, dried fruit, sweet spices, chocolate, oak, toffee, Bourbon vanilla, plum marmalade and Everlasting flower. On the palate it is velvety, silky and complex. The finish is intense, with a long after-taste

This is not just a gift by the Angels. It is a rare treasure. METAXA ANGELS’ Treasure.

Metaxa

The story of the METAXA Company began in 1888, when Spyros Metaxas founded the first factory in Piraeus. After that, follows a period when the METAXA drink becomes known and popular worldwide. It soon begins to win numerous awards, medals and prizes. Nowadays, it is exported to over 60 countries, and holds a unique position amongst the 100 most popular drinks globally. It is produced, in the contemporary factory, using the same recipe which Spyros Metaxas used: A) White varieties of wine (mainly Savvatiano and Roditis) are distilled twice, and the product is left to mature in new French oak barrels in cellars. B) At the same time, wine from the varieties Moschato, from Alexandria and Moschato from Samos (from the regions of Lemnos, Patras and Samos) is left to age for at least 2 years, spending part of this period, in barrels. C) Finally, a third blend is created from the extract of aromatic plants and spices that constitutes the "best-kept" secret of the company. D) The three blends are combined together resulting in the final blend, which ages in barrels before it is bottled. The various brands of Metaxa are distinguished from the number of stars on the label, which imply the years of ageing of the distillations used, and the small variations made to the recipe.

Attica

Attica was first inhabited during the Neolithic era and it has always had a central role in the historical events of Greece. Its mythical past is also of particular interest, since it was the city favoured most by the twelve Olympian gods. During ancient times, Athens, and Attiki in general was a great economic, political, intellectual and cultural force, culminating during the "Golden Age of Pericles".The Acropolis of Athens was built during that time, along with the architectural monuments of the Sacred Rock of the Acropolis and many other great buildings. The Peloponnesian War, the expansion of Alexander the Great’s empire, the Roman occupation, the spreading of Christianity, the Byzantines' contempt, the arrival of the Francs, Catalans and Venetians, and finally the period of the Ottoman occupation, all marked the history of Attiki, right up to the year 1834, when Athens was nominated capital, of the finally independent Greek state.

The landscape of Attiki is characterized by the Athenian blue sky, the sun and the glorious shades that the sunset brings out on its stone mass. Also worth mentioning, are the mountains that surround the basinof Attiki with their characteristic vegetation, the national parks, the forest of Kessariani, the wetlands of Mesogeia and the beautiful sandy beaches. One can also spot native and migratory birds, visit countless archaeological sites and walk along the narrow streets of the picturesque area of Plaka, admiring the balconies of its magnificent neoclassical buildings.

In Greek Mythology, legend goes that Dionysus, god of wine and merrymaking, entrusted the inhabitants of Attica with the cultivation of the grapevine and the art of winemaking. The terroir of Mesogia, Attica, renowned for its wines, is Greece’s oldest. It is where the celebrated grape variety “Savvatiano” is grown and where Retsina, the queen of Attica wines, reigns supreme. Retsina is under a Traditional Appellation certification as its unique, traditional traits guarantee a product of special taste and true Greek character. Apart from Mesogia, the region of Attica also includes the area of Piraeus which is Greece’s and the eastern Mediterranean’s largest port celebrated for its strategic and trading significance since ancient times. Today, it is Greece’s and the Greek economy’s largest hub of commercial activities and has the highest passenger traffic among European ports. The Prefecture of Attica is often a preferred destination for visitors as it combines countless, breathtaking vistas with a wide range of entertainment and culinary choices
