Step by Step Instructions
- Step 1: Sauté the onions in a wide saucepan with olive oil and then add the butter, making sure that the onions are caramelized.
- Step 2: Once the onions reach the desired colour, add salt - helping to draw out their juices.
- Step 3: Once their juices have been drawn out, pour in the stock, salt and pepper and cook on low heat for approximately 20 minutes.
- Step 4: Cut the baguette in thin slices and bake in the oven at 170°C for 6-8 minutes until they become crisp. As soon as you remove the crisp slices of bread from the oven, sprinkle the grated gruyère cheese over them.
- Step 5: Spoon out the soup into individual ovenproof soup bowls. Top each bowl with 2-3 toasted slices of bread with gruyère cheese.
- Step 6: Place the bowls in the oven for a while, until the cheese melts.
- Step 7: Remove the soup bowls from the oven and enjoy this absolutely delicious French onion soup.
