Product Description
Here at 'ML Valsamo' we think of our Thyme and Orange Blossom honeys as the highest quality distillates of the wilderness of the Laconian land. 'Valsamo' monofloral honeys achieve their sweet delicate flavors through the nectar that honeybees gather from the dominant plant source (thyme or orange blossom respectively) and also from the unique characteristics of geography and climate of the area. With no heat treatment, our honey retains all its flavors and develops a fabulously rich and thick texture. It is not pasteurized or fine-filtered so slight traces of beeswax may be found in the jar, however producing a high level of anti-bacterial properties. Our honeys are delicious on toast, breakfast cereals, yoghurts and nuts, or plainly as a natural sweetener in tea or coffee, deserts or salad dressings.

Product History
References of honey can be found in ancient times, where it seemed to hold a special place in daily diet. Ancient Greeks believed that honey was the food of the Gods of Olympus (Nectar of the Gods). According to Greek mythology, Zeus was brought up with honey, by nymph Melissa at Diktaion Andron cave. Also, during the Byzantine period, honey was one of the main parts of the diet in monasteries. Today, the world-acclaimed Mediterranean Diet and particularly the Cretan Diet consider honey to be the main and healthiest sweetener. A symbol of fertility and well-being, the nutritional value of honey is undeniably great. Honey contains simple sugars which are directly absorbed by the body, making it a quick source of energy. It also contains vitamins and precious micronutrients.

ML Valsamo

ML Valsamo' was created by a group of friends with common memories and dreams. Having spent all our childhood summers in the Greek countryside, closely tied to our land and the aromas of the Greek earth, we wanted to share what we loved most, through pure products and tastes of our homeland. And so we started our journey. Small local producers, people who love the fruits of Greek nature and know how to harvest and process them with respect as per local traditions, so as to create small gastronomic wonders, became our fellow workers. To be precise, these people became our friends, our family. All of our products are hand picked and we have personally tasted and approved them based on their high quality and uniqueness, constantly researching the market for new delicacies. In Greece we use the word Valsamo to metaphorically describe anything soothing, healing and comforting; a therapeutic remedy for the body and soul. This is exactly what our products achieve. Their discreet flavors act therapeutically, satisfying all of our senses. A valsamo anyone can have in his kitchen and on his table; a small journey of flavors and aromas anyone can relish when opening one of our jars.

Lakonia

Laconia can be summed up in one phrase: Magical World. Just like the magical worlds of fairy tales, it captivates one and all with its spellbinding beauty, making it everyone’s fervent wish to drink in that beauty even for a moment! Its history and tradition, its mountain and sea vistas, its genuine people and their deep-seated values, all compose a paradise on earth that no one should miss. The prefecture of Laconia is the southernmost prefecture of Peloponnese and Continental Greece. It gives to the Aegean Sea, the Gulf of Messinia, and the Laconian Gulf.Lakonia could be described as a crossroad where natural beauty meets ancient history. It is the southernmost prefecture of continental Greece. Most interestingly, it invites its visitors on a trip in history through its numerous monuments, extending from ancient and byzantine times to the modern days. Discover legendary Sparta with the glorious byzantine castle city of Mystras and the medieval castle of Monemvasia! Visit the byzantine churches and monasteries, take a walk along the cobblestoned alleys and spend some time admiring the mansions with the arches and the Venetian crests. All these monuments help us explore the rich history of the area. On the other hand, the landscape is characterized by great natural beauty, ideally combining the roughness of the mountains and the serenity of the sea. Experience its magical influence! The rough beauty of Mani, the emerald waters of Elafonissos, the one and only Greek fjord in Gerakas are truly worth exploring! You can also add the valley of Evrotas river, the picturesque Gythio, the countless fishing villages, natural Diros caves, the villages on Mount Taigetos and Parnonas, green gorges, watermills, caves and waterfalls. All these make a heavenly landscape!

Laconia, just like the rest of the Peloponnese, is renowned for its wealth of highly-praised, all-natural local products which one can find at each and every corner of it: its top-quality olive oils, its famed wines, its pure honey, the homemade, traditional “spoonful” preserves, and its aromatic herbs are the basic traditional and delicious products inviting you to taste them. It is on the wholesomeness and unrivalled flavor of those products that local cuisine relies to usher you into unforgettable gourmet experiences and mold the Laconian land’s social culture and local character.
