Product History
Klein, weich und köstlich wird das Lokum in den traditionellen Kaffeehäusern zum griechischen Kaffee serviert und ist in orthodoxen Klöstern die typische Begrüßungsspezialität für Gäste. Von den Sultanspalästen Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts erreichte das Lokum schnell die ganze Welt. In Griechenland gibt es das Lokum schon seit Anfang des 19. Jahrhunderts und es ist seither ein besonderer Teil der griechischen Tradition. Die Griechen haben bei der Herstellung von Lokum ihre eigene Inspiration sowie ihre eigenen Zutaten, wie z.B. Mastix, hinzugefügt. Die namhaftesten griechischen Lokume kommen aus Chios, Syros, Komotini, Rhodos und Patras – jedes mit seinem eigenen besonderen Charakter.

Chios

Chios gehört zur Inselgruppe der Nordägäischen Inseln und ist die fünftgrößte Insel Griechenlands. Sie zeichnet sich durch eine jahrtausendelange Geschichte aus, die ihren Anfang in der Jungsteinzeit nimmt. Zunächst war Chios eine große Schifffahrts- und Wirtschaftsmacht bis zur Besetzung und Zerstörung der Insel durch die Perser im Jahre 493 v.Chr. Danach erlangte sie allmählich ihre Autonomie und Unabhängigkeit zurück - bis zur Invasion der Römer und letztendlich bis zur ihrer vollständigen Zerstörung durch starke Erdbeben. Der erneute Wiederaufbau der Insel begann im 11. Jahrhundert. Im Jahre 1204 wurde Chios vom Byzantinischen Reich annektiert. Danach wurde sie von den Genuesen und anschließend von den Türken erobert, die 1822 das historische Massaker von Chios anrichteten. Im Jahre 1912 wurde die Insel befreit. Heutzutage ist Chios ein beliebtes touristisches und kulinarisches Reiseziel. Der Besucher von Chios wird von den zahlreichen Schönheiten, die der Insel ein Gefühl von Ruhe, Gelassenheit, Eleganz und Authentizität verleihen, gefesselt. Dazu gehören u.a. wunderschöne Kiesel- und Sandstrände, mittelalterliche Dörfer, traditionelle Siedlungen, byzantinische Kirchen, Klöster, Steinherrenhäuser, enge Gassen, Gärten mit Zitrusbäumen, Obst- und Gemüseplantagen, Thymian, Mastix-Bäume und natürlich der duftende Mastix.
