Product Description

Basil is a culinary herb which derives its name from the Greek word for "royal” or "that which belongs to the king”, a name that it richly deserves as it is considered a "master herb” and the "king of herbs” by many cookery authors. It was brought to Europe in ancient times and its popularity quickly spread throughout the Mediterranean Basin and Greece where it became interwoven with the culinary tradition of the Greek countryside.

"The king’s plant” was brought to Greece from its native India when King Alexander the Great returned from his military campaign there. Many are the varieties of basil and their differences are mostly found in the size and color of its leaves. In Greece, where it’s treasured for its profuse aroma, culinary versatility, and use in home remedies, it’s everywhere from the balconies of urban apartments to the rioting gardens of rural homes. Equally abounding are folk sayings about basil with "basil grows and evil goes” and "basil is here, never fear” being just a sample.

Basil is often given to a new home as a housewarming gift as it is said to bring luck and good fortune. From May on, when the open-air produce markets begin selling it, you won’t find a home without a basil plant. Basil is well known for its antiseptic and decongestive properties and its diaphoretic ability to detoxify the system by accelerating sweating. It’s rich in the antioxidant pro-Vitamin A which helps alleviate asthma, osteoarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis symptoms. It is also a powerful source of magnesium which promotes cardiovascular health and of potassium, Vitamin C, iron, as well as calcium. Pure Natura brings you all the goodness and benefits of its organic basil in dried form. Production and processing are carefully carried out and monitored so that the end product reaches you with all of its sensory and nutritional traits intact. Isn’t time you named Crete’s Royal Highness king of your staples?

Product History

Gathering herbs has been a Greek habit since ancient times, given their use as a raw material in medicine, perfumery, fabric painting and the kitchen. From Centaur Chiron of Greek mythology to the father of medicine, Hippocrates, and then to Dioskourides, who set the foundations of botanology, the already known use of herbs continued extensively during Christianity and developed more in the Middle Ages, while nowadays the interest in the use of aromatic and pharmaceutical herbs remains undiminished.
