Product Description
A symbol of joy and happiness in ancient Greece, oregano is one of Greek Nature's iconic plants. A perennial undershrub, oregano is ever present in the Greek countryside from the rugged mountain slopes of the mainland regions to the sun-drenched, rocky soil of the islands. There are eight strains of the Origanum species that can be found self-growing in arid parts of the Greek mainland and islands. There’s little difference between oregano strains and it has to do mostly with the color of their flowers. In appearance, all strains are more or less the same. Oregano’s aromatic and healing properties are also common to all Greek oregano strains and owe their existence to such active ingredients as carvacrol and thymol which also contribute to oregano’s flavor. Oregano is the Mediterranean’s most popular herb and is positively worshipped by Greek cuisine devotees. Terra Ferea’s Greek organic oregano is carefully hand-picked for freshness in the fertile area of historical Velestino, in the region of Thessaly. It is an all-natural traditional product that is allowed to grow unperturbed by pesticides and chemicals. Oregano is characterized by small, green oval leaves, tiny, white-flower clusters, and an unparalleled, warm balsamic aroma. However, stopping at its sensory characteristics would be an injustice as it also has numerous healing properties and nutritional elements. Oregano is a seasoning rich in Vitamin C, magnesium, potassium, iron, phosphorus, and beta-Carotene. In Greece, it has been traditionally used as a folk remedy due to its healing, analgesic, antiseptic, and anti-rheumatic properties. To a large extent, those herbal remedy properties of oregano are corroborated in the writings of ancient Greek and Byzantine physicians. Celebrated since ancient times, oregano transfigures recipes into tantalizing, Mediterranean temptations! For a taste that is irresistible, add a small amount of your Terra Ferea oregano to meats, salads, pies, and potatoes.
